When working in the nursing profession safety is always a priority. However, does the patient safety come before the safety of the nurse? Nurses are more likely to injure themselves while repositioning a patient improperly. When working in a fast past environment like an ER self-injures are the less of a nurse’s worries. They can also be affected by violence from the patient or their family. Additionally nurses are at risk of occupational exposure to blood and bodyfluids (BBFs). Caring for a patient is always priority; however, it should not be at the risk of the nurse’s own safety. Advocating for nurses safety is shifting, but at a snail’s pace, and is not keeping up with days technology to prevent injuries. Nurses should always practice safety to protect themselves. “Musculoskeletal injuries are common from lifting patients without enough assistance.”[Sch09] According to Ashely Schoenfisch “nurses life the equivalent of 1.8 ton every eight hours shift.” When a patient need to be moved mechanical lifting and siding boards should be used whenever possible.
