Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive compulsive disorder can be a debilitating obsession over certain things inpeople’s lives that can exclude them from daily activities and feeling normal. The sense ofindividuals changes when they have been diagnosed with this disorder leading them to feeldifferent and for some as if they are not good enough, or clean enough. Obsessive compulsivedisorder (OCD) can affect many individuals from adolescence to adulthood. “People who sufferfrom this disorder often have uncontrollable thoughts of worry and anxiety that lead to actionsand behaviors that become repetitive habits, (Sterk, 402).” In this paper we will discuss theeffects of OCD and if it has any correlation with psychosis. SignificanceThe significance of this article was to determine if patients who had OCD were alsoleading to causes of psychosis and the risks of these individuals. “Obsessions and compulsionswere denned in accordance with DSM-III-R criteria and assessed by clinicians. We analyzed theonset of obsessive–compulsive symptoms and its relation to the onset of first episode psychosis,(Sterk, 400)”. The article states on how there was a strict definition of OCD was used withpatients of 9.3% of which had schizophrenia, but 20.7% had a “ultra-high risk in subjects.” Somepatients were given the choice to opt out of the trial if they felt the need to and when they did sothey were not a part of the statistics anymore.
