Dementia is a term used to describe health conditions associated with a decline in reasoning abilities and the level of memory. The disease reduces the abilities of individuals to perform their daily activities. An example of a condition that displays dementia symptoms is vascular dementia which is common after a patient experiences a stroke. The disease is caused by any damage to brain cells which interferes with the abilities of the cells to communicate with each other. Thinking, memory level and behaviours of an individual are automatically affected if the brain cells cannot communicate efficiently. factors that contribute to damaging of the brain cells are depression, wrong medications, and excessive consumption of alcohol and vitamin deficiency. Therefore the first step of protecting individuals from acquiring the condition is by ensuring safety from the factors and creating a comfortable and accommodating living environment.

Life of an individual automatically changes ones dementia is acquired. An individual becomes unable to keep track of events and activities which make it challenging to control their daily lives. An individual is forced to write down every action he performs for reference or have someone to help in every activity. It, therefore, affects the individual as well as families and friends around him who have to stop always create time and aid the infected individual. Dementia also affects communication and language ability of the patient. An individual finds it difficult to pass relevant information to others because of lack of the ability to listen, absorb and remember. The ability to focus, reason and view the world like other ordinary people is also affected.  An individual reaches a point where he cannot make own judgment and therefore cannot help in any decision making.

Patients with the condition need a lot of support from the community, medical practitioners and friends for better and efficient healing. As identified, damaging of brain cells is caused by depression, vitamin deficiency, medication side effects and drug abuse. Therefore, the community must create an environment free from these factors.  Medical practitioners have a duty of ensuring any medication is scientifically researched and approved for safe consumption to avoid adverse side effects that may also contribute to dementia.
