Introduction

According to a report by the Business Perspectives on Emerging markets, India, China, Russia, and Brazil were the leading world’s top emerging markets for the period between 2012 and 2017. Most of the top 30 emerging markets are in Latin America or Asia. Over the same period, the International Monetary Fund projected economic growth rates for Russia at 3.9%, 3.7% for Brazil, in comparison with 8.5% for China and 7.4% for India. However, it would appear that Brazil and Russia attracted global investments for reasons other than economic growth rates. Such reasons are their huge domestic markets stemming from a high population, regional dominance in politics and many natural resources. On the other hand, countries such as Singapore attract businesses due to its ease of access and its status as a hub for South East Asia Expansion (Lee, 2015). Various emerging markets attract business for diverse reasons. This paper analyzes Brazil as an emerging market with respect to demographics, nominal gross domestic product, political and economic risks. In addition, we will study the how Brazil and Singapore as emerging markets compare. Finally, a discussion will follow highlighting the differences in market efficiency between the United States of America and Brazil based on various factors.

Brazil as an Emerging Market

A ranking based on purchasing power parity and nominal gross domestic product places Brazil as the eighth largest economy in the world and the largest in South America. The International Monetary Fund estimated that Brazil’s economy had a nominal GDP of US$ 2.080 trillion in 2017, being ranked as the second largest economy in the Americas, after the United States of America. According to the 2017 International Monetary Fund, Brazil ranked 65^th in the global per capita income, with a value of US$ 10,019 per inhabitant. As of March 2018, the inflation rate in Brazil based upon the consumer price index was at 2.86% according to the World Bank.

Boasting a mixed economy, Brazil relies on import substitution policies to achieve economic growth. Estimates state that Brazil has US$ 21.8 trillion worth of natural resources including large gold, uranium and coal deposits. Braz ……………
