To understand the high prevalence rates among prisoners, we must look at environmental, familial, and individual factors that would in part explain why someone is more likely to commit crimes. The evidence shows that too often inmates’ living environments before prison tend to be characterized by certain conditions that would make illness and disease more susceptible. These environments tend to have a higher prevalence of pollution in the air as well as in the water, as well as including the higher presence of mosquitoes that carry disease that tend to find home where there are conditions of trash and standing water. Other characteristics of the environments inmates tend to come from include a higher exposure rate to crime and drug violence, disturbing family patterns such as domestic violence, and others. This in turn increases the activation of the fight or flight system leading to the onset of poor health and certain stress-related disease, such as heart disease.
