The medicine wheel model examines the implications of a social problem in four parts. How the issue affects the person, the family, the community, and the wider world (Bopp & Bopp, 2011). My example using the medicine wheel model involves a situation my father experienced through his work. He is a primary care provider in an outpatient clinic at a Manitoba hospital that requires him to work three weeks on and two weeks off. Recently his employer asked if he would be able to shorten his rotation at his present working location and leave to attend a different hospital that was short-staffed. He was also requested to stay an additional three days past his expected time to return home. In regards to the medicine wheel model (Bopp & Bopp, 2011), the person affected was my father. This experience caused him to feel stressed and over-worked. His family was benefited by an increase in compensation but this also caused him to miss a family event. The hospital he went to help assist (community) was benefited and the patients were able to be treated. The wider world, Manitoba healthcare system, was affected by knowing that someone is available to cover if a facility is short-staffed in the near future. Reference: Bopp, M., & Bopp, J. (2011).
