Nursing Theory Analysis Paper: Jean Watson
Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, (LL-AAN) is a well-known professor, author, and dean at the University of Colorado, College of Nursing. University of Colorado is where she obtained her undergraduate degree in nursing and psychology. She then obtained her master’s degree in psychiatric- mental health nursing, and became the United States first endowed Chair in Caring Science, all at the University of Colorado. She has held that position for over sixteen years. Watson later went to earn her PhD in educational psychology and counseling from the University of Colorado. Some of Watson accomplishments included but are not limited to a former president of the National League for Nursing, founder of the Watson Caring Science Institute, founder of the Center for Human Caring in Colorado, co- founder of the International Association in Human Caring and International Caritas Consortium and a member of the American Academy of Nursing. She is the author and/or co-author of over twenty books and have received eleven honorary doctoral degrees. In 2013, Watson was inducted as a living legendby the American Academy of Nursing. As of today, Jean Watson continues to contribute to nursing all around the world.Mid- range theorist Jean Watson has achieved many accomplishments throughout her nursing career. Unarguably, her greatest accomplishment she is most known for creating is the Theory of Human Caring. Watson used her personal experiences and journey to influence her development of the human caring theory (Butts, 2015, p.272). Watson also credited many theorists for influencing her early theory development. Today, the Theory of Human Caring is recognized all over the world and is used by many disciplines. This theory looks at the patient holistically, examining the mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the individual.
